Sam B. Cantey III was born in Fort Worth in 1914. He was the son of Sam Cantey, Jr. and grandson of Sam Cantey, Sr., both well-known Fort Worth attorneys. He graduated from Culver Military Academy and Washington and Lee University. He began collecting art while he was a student. He became involved in banking and eventually became a vice-president of the First National Bank.
